Third trimester begins March 8

Iowa Conservatory (ICon) at Nolte Academy offers a fine-arts intensive education for young people ages 11-19 that complements core online learning models. Areas of study include dance, theatre and visual arts.

ICon’s mission is to provide young learners with high integrity arts education opportunities in the Midwest. We know that arts education develops passionate, innovative future leaders. This foundation for making art inherently requires a development of the 4 C’s of the 21st century skills: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.

Now, more than ever, families are able to actively fine tune their children’s educational opportunities. While ICon has been in the planning stages since 2017, we are in a unique time to be able to offer this program in a different way than we first envisioned. With a global pandemic top-of-mind, ICon offers a safer way to interact, learn and engage socially.

2021-22 Icon information

ICon and Academics:
ICon's schedule complements online or homeschool learning options. For the 2021-22 school year, the ICon team has been working in tandem with the ICCSD Online Program (OLP) to ensure that our program compliments their core requirements. Anyone open enrolling into the ICCSD OLP must do so by March 1, 2021. Iowa City Community School District families who wish to enroll in ICCSD Online will be able to formally make this request at a later date. Junior high and high school students will be asked to indicate their enrollment selection during course registration each year. *Important note: as a full-time student in ICCSD OLP (defined as enrolled in 4 courses at the secondary level), students are eligible to participate in all ICCSD extracurriculars and social school community events.

ICon's Program Tracks for 2021-22:
  • Dance: A program for middle and high school students who are suited for and dedicated to the study of classical dance. Students focus primarily on ballet and modern dance technique with carefully designed elective offerings in the areas of contemporary, tap and jazz. Students can be both pre-pointe or en pointe. All students will participate in a curriculum of interdisciplinary arts education, utilizing a project-based instructional approach. They will work collaboratively with theatre and visual arts students and faculty on creative works.
  • Theatre and Visual Arts: This program is for middle and high school students looking for a deeper experience in theatre arts, with in-depth study in the foundations of acting, singing, musical theater and fine arts. This program provides dance training for actors and singers, as well as foundations in visual arts for those who may want to explore the design and production side of stage arts. All students will participate in a curriculum of interdisciplinary arts education, utilizing a project-based instructional approach. They will work collaboratively with dance students and faculty on creative works.

2021-22 Schedule:
Each 4-day Arts Program takes place in the afternoon 12-4PM M-TH, operating as a nine-month program. The 2021-22 academic year will begin on August 30, 2021 and end on May 26, 2022.

We offer an optional 4-day Academics Lab taking place from 8AM-12PM M-TH onsite for students participating in the ICCSD OLP. The lab will provide pre-service teachers to provide support for students in the areas of English, reading, math and science. Students will bring their own computer and course materials. No lunch will be provided at this time.
