Natalie began teaching at Nolte in the summer of 2011 after relocating from Indiana. She enjoys working with all ages in all forms of dance, but you are most likely to see her dancing around with colorful scarfs in our baby classes or working some serious sass with our jazz dancers.

I love boy bands! I have been a boy band lover since elementary school and still enjoy them to this day. It started with a love of New Kids on the Block and moved onto the Backstreet Boys in my middle school years. But there is no band that can replace my all time favorite group, Hanson. From their first hit to their most recent christmas album, it isn’t uncommon for me to be listening to them on repeat or refuse to get out of my car until their song is done playing on the radio.
When I’m not too busy jamming to Hanson’s greatest hits, I enjoy spending time with my family. After meeting my husband in 5th grade, growing up in a small town together, moving off to college, getting married and starting a new life in Iowa we decided we should try the parenting thing. Any and all advice, tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated. Now a family of 4 with our beautiful daughter and silly son, we find that simple things like going on walks, or eating popcorn and watching a movie at home are some of our favorite things.

One of my favorite songs is by Tori Amos, a live mashup of her song “God” and Kate Bush’s “Running up that Hill.” One of the reasons I love that song is because while Bush is often cited as an artist who influenced Amos, the mashup seamlessly makes two disparate songs work together. The concept of the mashup also relates to my life, which is a bit of a mashup as well.
I grew up in Detroit, but have lived in New York, Salt Lake City, Tempe, AZ, Chicago, Austin, New York (again), Denver and now Iowa City. Moving to Iowa City has also allowed me to mashup my professional backgrounds: Teaching at Nolte feeds my artistic passions by allowing me to train young artists in the art of ballet. My day job is working at the University of Iowa as a researcher and Assistant Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Communication Studies, where I teach and research about race, gender and sexuality as related to media production and audiences, feeds me - literally. But lest these two areas seem entirely at odds with one another, one research project, which will soon be published in the International Journal of Cultural Studies studies the ways black audiences engage with the ballerina Misty Copeland.
At the same time, the mashup also describes the work I choreograph for Nolte: while my “home base” is in ballet, my choreography relies on modern and jazz dance forms as well. My ballet for Dance Works this year, tentatively titled “Baroque and Blues,” will demonstrate the ways the mashup guides my choreographic output.
Katy is in her third year teaching courses in acting, voice, and musical theatre at Nolte Academy.
Katy also works as a professional actor, director, and dialect coach, most recently with Riverside Theatre, Working Group Theatre, Mirrorbox Theatre, and Revival Theatre Company.

I toured the country to fight bullying with theatre! I was a cast member in the first national tour of Jennifer Fawcett's award-winning play Out of Bounds, produced by Working Group Theatre and directed by Sean Christopher Lewis. Out of Bounds is a play about how cyber-bullying affects middle school students and their parents who try to help them. Though the story is a work of fiction, the ideas were based on interviews with teachers, counselors, police officers, social workers, parents and kids. We got to go everywhere from Las Vegas to Parker, CO to Newark, NJ with the show, and after performing we would lead talkbacks and workshops to engage our audiences in conversations about bullying and teach them how to use forum theatre activities to "rehearse for real life." This experience changed my life. It's easy for people to think that theatre is all about playing pretend or escaping reality, but it can also be used as a tool for social change!
I have run up a mountain in a hail storm! My best friend Laura and her husband live in Littleton, CO, and a few years ago I thought it would be fun to start a new tradition of flying out there with my son Jack once a year to hike and camp and make memories. Though I like to think the highlight was on our third annual trip when we hiked Royal Arch Trail, I know Jack's favorite memory was from our second trip. We were camping at Golden Gate Canyon State Park, and Laura and I had taken Jack to the restrooms at the bottom of the hill. Suddenly, the weather got bad. And I mean BAD! It was raining really hard. We knew we had to make it back to the tent, so I put Jack (then seven years old) on my back and took off running. Let me tell you, when you are used to living in Iowa, running uphill at that elevation with a small child on your back is no small feat! Of course, as luck would have it, as soon as I started running, the rain turned to hail. HAIL. Jack and I both started cracking up. We made it safely back to the tent, changed into dry clothes and cuddled up to read a Harry Potter book. It was certainly memorable, and when Jack told me that me running up a mountain in a hail storm will always be his favorite Colorado memory, I knew he had a flair for the dramatic, just like his mama.

We are excited to present Dance Works this June at Space Place Theatre. Our production will feature excerpts from Paquita, restaged by Sarah Barragan, original contemporary ballet pieces by Mauro Villanueva and Alfred Martin, and original contemporary and modern works by Leslie Nolte and Kenny Borchard.
This Saturday, February 16, we will be holding auditions for the ballet pieces - please see the schedule below. If you are unable to attend the audition, please speak with me to determine a class-time you can be observed.
If you are only interested in being considered for the contemporary or modern pieces, you do not need to attend this weekend's auditions. If cast, rehearsals will take place on Fridays-Sundays this Spring. There is a performance/costume fee of $150 for this production and you may be cast in more than 1 work.

Here we go again! Due to the dangerously cold temperatures fast approaching, we are following the lead of the school systems and the university. We will be cancelling classes this week from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
Our regular schedule will resume starting with 3:30pm classes on Thursday, January 31.
We appreciate your understanding and flexibility in dealing with uncontrollable circumstances. Our teachers have enjoyed seeing many new faces in their classes for make-ups!

Matilda Mackey is currently in her third year at The Juilliard School, where is she is studying vigorously in various dance classes. Those classes include ballet, modern, improvisation, composition, contemporary partnering, and contact improvisation.
Between academic classes, rehearsals for a repertory show called Spring Dances, rehearsals for a student-choreographed show called Senior Production, and Independent Workshop rehearsals, Matilda is also working on three work-study jobs. This schedule constantly demands Matilda to be efficient with time and organized with details.
“Nolte helped prepare me to stay on my toes regardless of how packed my schedule is because I was always performing in tons of competition, recital and gala pieces” Said Matilda, “At Nolte, I challenged myself to embark on numerous dance journeys at once, which then gave me the tools to follow through with the commitments I made for myself.”
Matilda attended Nolte Academy from the age of two. “I always felt at home at Nolte,” she said, “partly because dance itself is home to my body and mind but also because I grew up with Leslie and the other dancers who became some of my closest friends regardless of our current life paths.”
Through her fifteen years dancing at Nolte Academy Matilda says she was able to realize her self worth as a dancer. She says that because she was so deeply connected with her teachers and friends at the studio, they helped give her the confidence to embark on any journey she’d dream up.
“Nolte propelled me into the concert dance world through its care for high-caliber training on a truly loving level. I am forever grateful for my experiences at the studio.”
A note from Matilda to Nolte Academy Dancers:
"My biggest piece of advice for young dancers is to focus on what ignites you as a dancer. I think it is important for dancers, especially younger ones, to question their craft to discern what they’re truly passionate about within it. Once you’ve discovered what drives your love for dance, lean into that and focus on it, whether that means taking as many classes in that realm as you can or paving your own path to bring more oxygen to that flame. For example, I found my love for improvisation after I spent years pushing myself to dive into the seemingly fearful realm of reckless abandonment within improvisation. Now, improvising turns my switch on in the molecular level, and I am immensely thankful that I took the time to uncover what speaks to me most profoundly as a dancer.”
A fond memory of Nolte Academy:
“I have a funny memory passed down to me from Leslie and my parents from when I was quite literally a baby at Nolte. We were back at the old studio, Leslie had just freshly opened her business, and I was two years old. As a kid, I had a mischievous desire to hide all the time. Regardless the circumstance, regardless if I knew somebody knew where I was hiding, I wanted to hide in every nook and under every chair. So, I hid behind a giant fish tank Leslie had in the studio lobby after classes one day, and I didn’t budge despite hearing all the frantic calls for baby Matilda. Leslie was running through the studio and out onto the parking lot, utterly mortified; she had just opened the studio and she already had a lost child, not to mention what that child’s parents would say if their two year old disappeared from the studio. But, as all jokes die quickly, I decided I would pop up from behind the fish tank and voila, all is well! Needless to say, Leslie and everyone helping to search for me didn’t think my cute hiding ploys were as funny as I did.”

All students will be included in the recital unless you specifically opt-out by Saturday, December 22.
If you have a conflict or decide not to participate after this date, you will still be responsible for costume fees.
For the Nolte Treasure/Hancher recitals, class day/performance day* is as follows:
Monday classes perform Friday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday and Saturday classes perform Saturday, June 1 at 1 p.m.
Wednesday classes perform Saturday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday classes perform Sunday, June 2 at 1 p.m.
*Level 5+ classes will be in more than one performance, to be determined.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was with the Nutcracker performances this weekend. The students, crew and many volunteers all made a stunning weekend of performances possible.
