recital week notes

5/29/2019

We are gearing up for dress rehearsals to begin this afternoon! Many thanks for your cooperation and attention to details during this busy week!

A few notes about this weekend’s shows…
Picture
Hancher does not allow any type of recording during performances — photos, videos, audio, etc.

If you would like to take photos (no flash, please!) or videos of your performers on stage, please do so at dress rehearsal.

Also, tag us at #NolteTreasure on social media this week and weekend! We’d love to see your recital moments!

For the safety of all our dancers and families: parents, siblings and other family members are NOT ALLOWED backstage unless you signed up prior to the event as a volunteer. Every class has 2-3 volunteers assigned to it and are in constant conversation with our team to make things run smoothly. Parents should ready their child to walk with their teacher or teacher’s helper from the check-in table to their dressing area. At 10 minutes before the show begins, the backstage doors will lock and our backstage team will get to work, making sure our performers are having fun, using the restrooms and getting them safely to and from the stage.

We have two check-in/check-out tables that will be clearly marked outside Strauss Hall:

Table 1 is for Children’s Dance 1, Children’s Dance 2, Kinder Combo, 1st Grade Combo

Table 2 is for Levels 1-4 in all styles and Musical Theatre

Dancers in Levels 5+ will check in at their dressing room when they meet their parent volunteer for that show

• Please remember to pick up your Dancing with the Stars shirts during dress rehearsal this week! Joy will be at a table distributing T-shirts.

This weekend, performers should arrive at Hancher 30 minutes prior to their show’s start time.

They will enter the building at
Door 3 (the same doors we are using for dress rehearsal and where there are balloons to mark it). They should arrive ready for their first performance. The show order is attached to this email. Please send only essentials in a bag with your children and mark their name in all costumes, tights, shoes, etc. And, a reminder:

   • Monday classes perform Friday, May 31 at 6:30 pm
   • Tuesday and Saturday classes perform Saturday, June 1 at 1 pm
   • Wednesday classes perform Saturday, June 1 at 6:30 pm
   • Thursday classes perform Sunday, June 2 at 1 pm

Once performers are checked in, family members can enjoy the Hancher lobby, visit the Showcase store (flowers for performers will be available for sale) and then find your seats. There will be one 15 minute intermission which is when parent dancers will come backstage for our Dancing with the Stars performances. Parents dancing should meet us at Table 2/Levels 1-4 check-in table outside Strauss Hall.

If you have noisy children in the audience during the show, please consider taking them to the “Cry Room” at the back of the house.

Unless prior approval has been granted, performers will stay backstage during the show, regardless of where their dance falls in the order. We follow this policy for the safety of our dancers and enjoyment of our audiences. The younger groups will have access to supervised activities (coloring, puzzles, movies) and allergy-safe snacks. Please send a water bottle with your child (labeled with their name!). Please do not send a snack with your child. (If your child has dietary restrictions, you may send a safe snack with them keeping mind the allergy-safe/no-nut rule and please no: red juice, suckers, anything sticky or with food dye.) Please remind your child to let a chaperone know if they have to use the bathroom — we will also ask often. You may send books with your children, but please no toys or other activities. They will also have an opportunity to watch #NolteTreasure from a big screen back stage.

Performers in Children’s Dance 1, Children’s Dance 2 and Kinder Combo who perform before intermission may make arrangements to leave at intermission. If you would like to pick up your child at intermission, please email us and indicate your child’s name and who will be picking them up. Performers must be checked out (at their check-in/check-out table) upon leaving the show, even if you are already backstage with them (ie for Dancing with the Stars).

All students will return to the stage at the end of the show for a finale. Once that is complete, our backstage team will escort performers back to their assigned dressing area to help them collect their belongings. Parent volunteers will remain with their group until all are checked out and safely with their parent/guardian.
    • Performers in Levels 5+ will not be required to wait for a parent to check out. Please plan to meet these performers in the Hancher lobby.
    • All other performers will be required to check out. Please send only one family member to Table 1 or 2 to check out your performer.

NOTE: In case of emergency, each volunteer, Erin and Leslie have a clipboard of all of our performers for the show with allergy information, parent cell numbers and email. The Hancher staff is also fully connected by radio and we can get a parent backstage very quickly. If we were to need you, a Hancher Usher will escort you backstage. If you needed us, any Hancher Staff member located throughout the theatre and lobby can reach us.

The shows are shaping up to be incredible and our team can't wait to celebrate your performers on the Hancher stage!

general info:

  • We understand that some of our rehearsals take place during regular working hours for parents. Please know that we understand if you cannot make it to the dress rehearsal. Just let us know so that we can give you a little extra information for the showtime since it will feel new.
  • Your dancer should attend dress rehearsal with the required shoes, tights and costume(s). There will be dressing rooms to change in if you have more than one costume. If a younger dancer, please arrive in costume/your first costume. Hair should also be styled as required (low bun with a center part for all students starting at level 1 in all genres, away from face for levels below level 1).
  • You will be allowed to take pictures and video from the audience during the dress rehearsal. Recording your child is permitted during the dress rehearsal only.
  • During dress rehearsals, we do not have parent volunteers. Therefore, there is not childcare available or much chaperoning until your teacher gathers you to head onstage. Parents are required to be with their children backstage in Strauss Hall until the children are seated in the transfer area behind the stage. At that time, parents will be directed to the seats to watch. Our whole team will be making sure this happens without much effort from families, we just want to be sure you understand that if your child isn't on stage, they are in your care.
  • Food and beverages are not allowed in the seating area. Please make plans to eat outside of the theatre and/or before or after your rehearsal times.

Day of Your Rehearsal:

  1. The University of Iowa has graciously opened up the permit parking lots to us Tuesday-Thursday. You can park wherever you find a spot in the Hancher lot areas and you will not be ticketed. Please do not park in the front row directly adjacent to Hancher where it says "Showcase Parking."
  2. Everyone will enter Hancher through Entrance 3 for rehearsals. It is to the left of the front doors when you are looking at Hancher. We will have balloons placed by the door for an easy reminder.
  3. Classes are instructed to show up 20-30 minutes before their stage time.
  4. Students will be directed into Strauss Rehearsal Hall until it is time for them to rehearse. At that time, a Nolte staff member will take the students backstage and parents will exit Strauss to the lobby and enter the theatre through Door 1 where they can watch their child rehearse.
  5. Parents will only be allowed to go in and out of the theatre through Door 1. After each class rehearses, they will be directed back to Strauss Hall where their parent will pick them up to leave.
  6. There will be some students that are in multiple classes, and will need to be in the building for a few hours at a time. Parents and students can use Strauss Hall as their “hangout” area for the day of rehearsal. We will not be unlocking all of our dressing rooms during dress rehearsals to keep our group closer at hand.
  7. Hancher Production Staff will be in the lobby area to help direct traffic and make sure everyone knows where to go.
  8. After your dancer has exited the stage and you meet them back in Strauss Hall, you are free to leave.

we're excited for you all to see our incredible shows! Please let us know if you have any questions!

FAQ:

Q: When and where will picture week begin?
A: Halverson Photography will be on-site the week of May 13-18 taking class and individual photos in DeMille, our newest studio at the north end of the building. This year, group and individual photos will be streamlined with two stations in the same room. Photos will be taken during regular class time.
Q: What should my child be wearing?
A: We ask that you have your child arrive to the studio in their first class’s costume. For example, if your child is in Level 1 Combo, please have them dressed for whichever class they attend first. They will change into their other costume after the first session of photos.

Your children should be dressed as if taking the stage for recital: costume, required shoes, tights, optional makeup, hair away from face or bun for ballet/modern/lyrical/contemporary. They may wear glasses. Headpieces that came with costumes can be placed by instructors at the time of photos. Please make sure you have any "extras" with you that day -- i.e. gloves. You may click on our dress code
page for shoe/tight requirements. Demizo Dancewear has all required items for purchase. Rental costumes will not be sent home, and will be at the studio to change into for photos, then left until recital when students will change into them at Hancher.
Q: Where can my child change?
A: The two unisex restrooms in the north hallway will be reserved for males changing into costumes only. Please have your female students change in the large dressing room across from the women’s restroom. And please be respectful of the restrooms still being available for their primary purpose!

Your female students may be more comfortable wearing an undergarment leotard (“nudie”) under their costume for modesty/changing purposes. This is certainly not a requirement, but can make changing in a group more comfortable. Demizo has these for sale as well.
Q: Where can I see order options?
A: Click the button below to view a photo order form from Halverson. There are also physical copies available at the front desk. It is very helpful if you can fill out your form and select your photos for purchase BEFORE arriving at Nolte. Halverson accepts cash and checks.
Order form
Q: Can we get a headshot taken?
A: Musical Theatre/Acting/Voice students will have the opportunity to take headshots with Jackie Blake Jensen during class. You can find the headshot order form through the button below. Any dancers wishing to also purchase headshots may do so. Jackie will be taking photos in the preschool art room (north end of building on the left past DeMille) during class time. Jackie accepts cash and checks.

Thanks in advance for your patience during photo week. It’s always a bit of controlled chaos, but totally worth it for the outcome!

alumni Spotlight: Hannah gross

5/9/2019

Picture
Hannah is currently an apprentice with Elisa Monte Dance (EMD). As an apprentice she takes company class and learns repertoire, while serving as an understudy and is occasionally put in pieces.

Soon, Hannah will be included in their season show where she'll perform in two pieces. One piece by Elisa Monte and the other by the Artistic Director, Tiffany Rea-Fisher. "We rehearse all over the city, usually in Harlem or the Bronx, but occasionally in Astoria or Midtown." These rehearsals take place three times per week. Outside of rehearsals, Hannah also teaches for the Police Athletic League, babysits, and takes class at Gibney or Steps.

Hannah is definitely no stranger to a busy schedule. Following her time with Nolte, she attended the University of Iowa where she received a BFA in Dance and BA in Health and Human Physiology. "Juggling two degrees and a job was tough," said Hannah, "but the discipline I learned at Nolte definitely prepared me for what was to come."

Picture
She looks back at her time at Nolte Academy as a time of growth and opportunity, especially from Open Doors Dance Festival. "That was the most important thing Nolte gave me." She said, "Since they keep the classes small the teachers actually get to know you and recognize you."

Hannah remembers her first class at Gibney, filled with nervous energy from not knowing anyone in the class or the teacher.
However, when she  walked in, she ran into Louie Marin, who was a teacher at Open Doors Dance Festival. Louie recognized her from Nolte Academy. "He was excited for me and even told me about Carolyn Dorfman’s open company classes. These teachers are not only mentors but also your cheerleaders. They want to see you succeed." Said Hannah.

As for her advice to young dancers, she says to take every opportunity possible, because you never know where they will take you. She also emphasizes the importance of networking, albeit intimidating at first, Hannah describes it as simply making friends with people and staying connected. "Auditions are so much easier if you know someone that can put in a good word for you or tell you what to expect."
