Faith Ringgold is an artist and author, who was raised in New York City's Harlem. She knew she wanted to be an artist from a young age, and taught art in New York public schools for many years. Her early paintings explored social and political themes, such as civil rights and race riots. In the 1980s her medium turned to "quilt stories," for which she is best known.
